COMMUNITY SUPPORT
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
At Backcountry Communities Thriving, we’re dedicated to uplifting the Julian area through connection, collaboration, and direct support. We work alongside residents, nonprofits, small businesses and other organizations to strengthen local resources, improve access to services, and build community resilience.
From hosting workshops and sharing vital information to supporting local initiatives and providing advocacy, our mission is to ensure Julian remains a thriving, self-reliant, and connected backcountry community. Together, we’re creating lasting impact; rooted in local voices, driven by local needs.
FOOD PANTRY
Our food pantry is free and open to everyone at Backcountry Connections. Those in need, PCT hikers, locals and visitors are welcome to take what they need. Our partnership with the San Diego Food Bank gives us the opportunity to shop for goods to stock the pantry.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
BCT hosts the Community Wellness & Safety Expo each year to give residents a chance to meet with health, wellness and safety professionals. We also partner with a variety of organizations, such as the Alzheimer’s Association and Legal Aid, to provide free workshops and informational meetings.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
As the fiscal sponsor of the Julian Fire Safe Council, BCT regularly works with the San Diego County Fire Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and SDGE to promote wildfire safety and disaster preparedness. BCT often seeks grant funding to help residents with defensible space clearing and go-bag supplies.
SCHOLARSHIPS
BCT offers two scholarships to Julian High School graduating seniors. The David Walton Memorial Scholarship and the Bobbi Green Memorial Scholarship are available each year and vary on their requirements. BCT also established the Abigail Yenawine Scholarship Fund to support a young woman who lost her parents while in high school. BCT pledged to support Abigail throughout her four years at UC Merced. Each year, BCT holds a fundraiser to help Abigail with college expenses.

HOUSING SUPPORT PROGRAM
The CalWORKs Housing Support Program (HSP) is a program that fosters housing stability for families experiencing homelessness. It assists homeless CalWORKs families in obtaining permanent housing and can provide temporary shelter, help with moving costs, short to medium-term rental subsidies, and wraparound case management. TAKE ME HOME PROGRAM
Getting lost is scary and can be dangerous. Especially for someone living with dementia, autism, or other developmental disabilities. Ask yourself: Could your loved one communicate their name and address if they were lost? If the answer is no, or may change at some point, consider enrolling in the Take Me Home program. The Take Me Home program is a safety net for the future, so you can have peace of mind today. This information is confidential, and can only be accessed by law enforcement in an emergency. You can sign your loved one up for the Take Me Home program by contacting the Julian Substation, or by clicking the registration link here.
All members of the community who need special assistance if they are alone or in times of emergency are eligible for this program.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE (YANA)
We want our elderly, disabled and shut-in residents to know they are never alone. It offers peace of mind and a sense of security for those who enjoy their independence but have no friends or family to check on them regularly. People in the YANA program are able to take care of their own day-to-day needs, but recognize that a medical crisis could render them helpless. Enroll in the YANA program here.
