BACKCOUNTRY COMMUNITIES THRIVING
BACKCOUNTRY COMMUNITIES THRIVING
Born out of a desire to support those in need, Backcountry Communities Thriving (BCT) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit in Julian, California serving the community and surrounding rural areas within the San Diego backcountry.
Our motto is... We rise by lifting others.
REAL NEED
The mission of Backcountry Communities Thriving is to ensure the well-being of each child, family and individual in Julian and surrounding rural areas through advocacy, service and support to foster a thriving community.
Julian is located over 60 miles east of San Diego. Made up of mountain and desert climates, Julian is close to 178 square miles in size. However, the small school districts cover 618 square miles. The rural location of Julian, the aging population and the lack of access to public transportation, healthcare options and social services creates unique challenges for residents.
REAL IMPACT
The goal of BCT is to provide services and programs to the Julian community that are otherwise not available in the backcountry. Access to resources such as social services, transportation and quality housing options are basically non-existent in rural communities. BCT advocates for residents living in the backcountry to have access to these missing resources. BCT also seeks solutions to problems that many residents face by fulfilling a variety of needs or creating connections with other organizations and agencies.
Just some of our accomplishments for the community include:
Advocacy and support the Butterfield Ranch Community residents to combat deplorable living conditions.
Julian High School District: New weight room equipment, renovated tennis/pickleball courts, new putting green, sports equipment for each team, free school supplies for each student (2024-2025), Christmas gifts for each student (2023-2024) and more.
Reflective address signs for Julian residents through the Julian Fire Safe Council.
Scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
Create and distribute a free bimonthly community publication, The Julian Voice.
Helped to reinstate the monthly Senior Potlucks after Sit-n-Fit at Julian Library.
Opened a community resource center, Backcountry Connections.
Sponsoring free monthly Tai Chi classes for older adults.
